Designing a Home Spa: An Ice Bath Alongside Your Sauna or Pool
Share
A private spa begins with the way you want to spend time there. It might be a quiet room beside a sauna, a shaded garden connected to the swimming pool, or a dedicated place to pause away from the rest of the house.
An ice bath can become part of that setting. The design task is to make the experience feel natural, from approaching the bath to finding a towel afterwards.
For homeowners, architects and interior designers planning an ice bath in Dubai, elsewhere in the UAE or internationally, these are useful conversations to have before the finishes are finalised.
Begin with your own routine
Picture an ordinary day. When would you use the bath? Would you prefer privacy, a view of the garden, or a setting connected to the pool terrace?
A sauna, swimming pool and ice bath each offer a different experience. They can share a material palette and a coherent route through the home without needing to sit immediately beside one another. Plan their use around the individual and appropriate professional guidance rather than assuming one hot-and-cold routine suits everyone.
A comfortable place to sit, easy access to a shower and a clear home for towels can make the setting feel more complete.
Create a material connection
The bath’s exterior should belong within the wider design. Look at the surrounding floor, joinery, stonework and planting before selecting the finish.
The natural teak of the Arctic Barrel and Arctic Oval brings warmth beside stone and water. The light beige travertine of Arctic Sereno can connect with architectural stone finishes in a bathroom, private spa or covered outdoor setting.
Natural grain and veining mean each bath has its own character. Review the material as part of the whole scheme, rather than expecting every piece of timber or stone to look identical.

Think about the moments around the bath
Privacy, lighting and the approach to the water all influence the experience. Consider sightlines from neighbouring rooms and terraces, where belongings will be placed, and how the setting will feel after dark.
Work with your designer on appropriate surrounding floor finishes and water management. Keep the route into and out of the bath clear, with its access step integrated into the arrangement.
For outdoor installations, include protective cover within the architectural or landscape design. Arctic Edge baths and equipment must stay out of direct sun and protected from rain at all times.
Keep the engineering discreet and accessible
The chiller forms part of the complete installation. On the Barrel, its standard position is beneath the step; on the Oval and Sereno, it sits behind the bath beneath a matching equipment cover.
It can be positioned up to three metres from the bath on the same floor level. That flexibility should be discussed before joinery is designed. Filters, hose connections and controls need access, and the chiller must have adequate ventilation.
Indoors, the project’s MEP team should assess how heat from the chiller will be removed. Coordinate the electrical supply, filling and draining arrangements, base and structural load, as well as the required 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection.
Our Installation & MEP guide provides the technical starting point. For a room or terrace layout, share drawings with Arctic Edge before construction.
Choose a care routine that suits the home
Include everyday care in the design conversation. Leave access for cleaning, water changes and filter care, and decide who will look after the bath.
For teak, towel dry after use and fully sand and apply two coats of outdoor teak oil every four months. Travertine does not require that teak sanding and oiling routine; follow the care instructions for the selected finish and complete system.
Compare the bath shapes and complete systems, then review the information for architects and interior designers. Our team can help coordinate the bath with the people creating your home.
